Image Matrix Tech on Sky News: Musk to Axe Blocking on X – formerly Twitter

In Sunday’s segment on Sky News Australia (Weekend Edition with Tim Gilbert) we revealed a massive backlash from users on social media platform X – formerly Twitter. The blow up came after owner Elon Musk announced the blocking feature is set to be axed. It will be kept for direct messages.

Musk said on X, “Block is going to be deleted as a “feature”, except for DMs.”

Elon Musk reveals the end of blocking on X

Even some of Musk’s top supporters aren’t happy. Vocal conservative, actor James Woods, said he would leave the platform if blocking was removed.

Another said, “If the block feature is to be removed, there needs to be zero anonymity on X anymore.”

James Woods just one of many Musk supporters to voice his disapproval

But that won’t happen. Muting a troll is not enough. As Threads starts to add new features – this is crucial time for X to attract and retain users and advertisers.

So is this an own goal from Elon Musk? We make that call in the segment.

77 inch LG C3 4K OLED with SC9 Soundbar with sub

You need a total solution. That’s a big screen plus big sound. The best way to do that is get matching devices. The LG C3 4K OLED is incredible for movies but even better for sport.

In this segment I show the 77 inch model delivering a stadium-like experience at home. A soundbar with subwoofer is critical to make it work.

LG combines TV and Soundbar sound

In this case I’ve been testing the SC9 soundbar with sub. It really makes you feel like you are at the event. By matching the soundbar with the TV – you get a flawless experience – so go for the same brand.

SC9 fits under the C3 but also comes with stand mounting options

In this case it’s LG with LG but it could be Samsung and Samsung or Sony and Sony. If you know what you’re doing, then try a third party soundbar but it’s far easier with a modern TV to keep the brand the same.

LG C3 OLED has excellent motion options

You’ll also need to make visual changes for sport. Under clarity settings, switch of cinematic and use smooth motion for a more realistic experience.

The LG interface is also sport friendly. The TV can keep you up to date with the latest news on your favourite team. In this case the Roosters.

Skullcandy announced the release of their all-new Crusher ANC 2 Headphones – and they are officially insane. They take the bass experience to a new level. Skullcandy call it Adjustable Sensory Bass. Skullcandy’s patented bass technology is ‘Music You Can Feel’.

And it’s true.

By adjusting the wheel on the headset you can dial in the amount of bass. It actually thumps on your head. I’ve never experienced a pair of headphones like it.

A control wheel allows the wearer to dial up the bass to insane thumping levels

Image Matrix Tech on Sky News: Samsung Flip 5

In Sunday’s segment on Sky News Australia (Weekend Edition with Tim Gilbert) we explained how the foldable flip phone has gone from novelty gadget to serious smartphone category in just a few years.

Samsung’s new Galaxy Z Flip 5 is the latest entry and its bigger outside display allows more tasks to be performed without opening the phone. Samsung calls it the 3.4″ Flex Window but whatever it’s called … the outside display is much bigger.

It needed to be bigger to combat impressive outside displays from OPPO and Motorola foldables in 2023. We show them side-by-side in this segment and explain why this category is popular.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 5G 512GB during pre-order is worth $1649.

Official Release date: 18 Aug 23

The competition:

  • Motorola Razr 40 Ultra 5G 256GB = $1499
  • OPPO Find N2 Flip 5G 256GB + $1499

While Android tablets aren’t for everyone this new Galaxy Tab S9 Series is certainly worth a look for a couple of reasons.

Let’s start with the display; it’s an absolute knockout. The Dynamic AMOLED 2X HDR10+ ensures scene-by-scene, frame-by-frame tone optimisation with a wide range of colours and brightness. The dynamic refresh rate of the Galaxy Tab S9 series automatically calibrates from 60 to 120Hz to balance smooth responsiveness with optimised battery efficiency. Eye Comfort also helps to reduce eye strain with low blue light, reduced by more than 70 percent.

Every device is equipped with the flagship Snapdragon® 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy, the same lightning-fast mobile processor in Samsung’s latest smartphones. For the first time on a Galaxy tablet, advanced vapour chamber technology helps power streaming, gaming or video editing marathons, so users will also benefit from optimised large-screen gaming experiences.

Every premium Galaxy Tab S9 device comes with the Galaxy S Pen.

Offering a pen-on-paper-like experience, Galaxy Tab S9 series and S Pen are now both IP68 rated for water and dust resistance.

The other big feature in my opinion …. is the pro-level LumaFusion video editing app which makes work easier when creating sharable content. Images and videos — even large files — taken on your Galaxy smartphone camera can be easily shared to Galaxy Tab S9 series with Quick Share. LumaFusion takes full advantage of Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra’s expansive screen and extra displays if needed. This is Android’s best video editing setup I’ve seen on a tablet.

Tab S9 starts at $1299 up to $2949 for the top Tab S9 Ultra.

I’m still reviewing the WF-1000XM5 truly wireless earbuds but what I’ve heard so far has blown me away.

Announced last week with an improved glossy texture and a more luxurious feel, these earbuds fit comfortably in your ears while keeping out external sounds. By downsizing the headphone body and optimising the placement of the components, the earbud is now approximately 25% smaller and 20% lighter than the WF-1000XM4. Sony also reduced the size of the charging case.

Noise Isolation Earbud Tips feature a unique polyurethane foam material which reduces noise in the high-frequency range. Soft and elastic, they maximise the contact area between the earbud tip and the ear canal, insulating your sound and reducing noise. It also improves adhesion to the ear canal for a more secure, stable fit.

  • Key Features
  • Class leading Noise Cancelling* Headphones
  • Compact and comfortable design
  • HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN2e – blocks more noise, in more situations
  • Integrated Processor V2, for reliable connectivity and high-quality sound
  • Dynamic Driver X- deeper bass and better audio detail
  • Up to 8 hours music per charge, or 24 hours when including the charging case
  • Qi® wireless and USB Type-C, with quick charge (3mins charge = 1 hour music)
  • Be heard with Sony’s best ever call quality, via precise voice pickup technology
  • Speak-to-Chat mode, speak to pause your music- no button press required
  • Headtracking for immersive spatial audio and optional head-gesture control¹
  • IPX4 rated – everyday protection from sweat and splashing water²
  • case is not water resistant
  • What’s in the box?

Release date is August 1st.

Image Matrix Tech on Sky News: Film is King – Oppenheimer IMAX 70mm

In Sunday’s segment on Sky News Australia (Weekend Edition with Tim Gilbert) we explained the different formats available to view Christopher Nolan’s epic film ‘Oppenheimer’.

In the age of digital video and massive smart TVs .. the traditional film experience is getting harder to find but Oppenheimer is showing film is still the king.

People are flying to Melbourne from all over the country and overseas just to see it in IMAX 70mm.  There are only 30 theatres in the world showing this format and Australia has one of them.

Oppenheimer, the story of the man who led the team that created first atom bomb, was shot in IMAX 70/65mm, including black and white, a large format film invented for this movie.

I’ve seen it in 70mm projection and while magnificent (I prefer the widescreen look) it’s not the same as IMAX 70mm as we explain in the segment.

IMAX 70mm runs through the camera/projector horizontally while 70mm or 35mm film runs through the projector vertically. As a result, you can fit three 70mm film frames into one IMAX 70mm frame. IMAX 70mm is also known as IMAX 1570 film. The 15 in 1570 relates to the perforations along the 70mm frame.

If you can’t see it in IMAX 70mm (it might take a month) don’t be too concerned. You will see the benefits of the original negative being shot in IMAX because all smaller versions of the film will look better. When a film is shot in higher resolution then watched in a lower resolution it will be sharper and more brilliant thanks to the quality and size of the original.

The ROG (ASUS Republic of Gamers) Phone 7 Ultimate is insanely powerful and fun. It is one of the most powerful phones ever made and it’s now available in Australia.

It’s targeted at gamers but it’s also a great phone for normal use. There are two models but the Ultimate is what we’re showing in this segment.

It has a massive battery – 6000 mAh – a couple of USB ports and 16GB of RAM.

The 165 Hz Samsung AMOLED display’s peak brightness has significantly increased compared to the previous model. The brightness is now up to 1,500 nits for easier viewing outside. It also has 720 Hz touch-sampling rate and ultrasonic buttons for rapid-fire shooting.

Keeping the phone cool while gaming is key so ASUS has included an AeroActive Portal. The air inlet activates automatically when the AeroActive Cooler is attached, directing a constant flow of cool air from the cooler onto the cooling fins of the vapour chamber.

When the AeroActive Portal is activated, the phone’s thermal efficiency can increase by up to 20%.

It also delivers 2.1-channel sound when the new AeroActive Cooler 7 accessory is attached, which houses a powerful subwoofer.

If you’re always doing Teams or Zoom meetings in the office and on the road all day – then the Jabra Evolve2 65 Flex could be the headset for you.

It’s the most portable professional headset with unique fold and-go design paired with best-in-class Hybrid Active Noise Cancellation.

It’s extremely comfortable – soft on your ears for people using headsets all day. The flexible ear cups rotate to move whenever you do.

Its 360° busylight glows red, sending out an easy-to-see “STOP” sign to anyone around you.

Evolve2 65 Flex is certified for all leading virtual meeting platforms – including Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and Zoom.

Plug-and-play setup is easy and with Dual connectivity letting you switch between devices, it’s easy to jump from listening to music on your phone to taking an incoming video call on your laptop without missing a beat.

Wireless range is up to 30m.

It will cost around A$500 – bit more with the charging stand, which the headset neatly sits on.
