Google’s AI Service Can Talk: Bard Gets Update

Bard, Google’s AI chatbot, can now respond in more than 40 languages and images can be used with US English accounts.

I changed my language from UK English to US English to use the Lens feature. I then tried Bard using an image of a Sony lens from a story posted on this site earlier today. It didn’t get the exact lens model right (not many people would either) but it was a very, very good effort. You can see the interaction below.

Bard can now use Google Lens to analyse images – if in US English

Here’s a summary of the updates.

Listen to responses

  • Starting today, you can listen to Bard’s responses in over 40 languages.
  • This is especially helpful if you want to hear the correct pronunciation of a word or listen to a poem or script.
  • Simply enter a prompt and select the sound icon to hear Bard’s answers.

Easily adjust Bard’s responses

  • You can now change the tone and style of Bard’s responses to your liking.
  • There are five different options to choose from: simple, long, short, professional, or casual.
  • This feature is live in English and will expand to new languages soon.

Pin and rename conversations

  • Google is adding new ways to pin and rename your conversations with Bard. Now when you start a conversation, you’ll see options to pin, rename and pick up recent conversations in the sidebar.
  • This feature is now live in over 40 languages.

Using images in your prompts

  • Lens is now active for Bard users with US English selected. It will expand to other languages soon.
  • Bard already shows images in your responses – e.g. if you ask, “Where should I visit in Washington, D.C.?” It’ll include visuals in the response along with the text.
  • Today, you’ll also be able to include images in your Bard prompts and Lens will work behind the scenes to help Bard make sense of what’s being shown.
  • Whether you want more information about an image or need inspiration for image text, such as a thank you note about a gift, you can now upload images with prompts and Bard will analyse the photo to help.

Sharing Bard responses

  • Google made it easier to share part or all of your Bard chat with your network. With shareable links, you can share your ideas and creations with others.
  • This feature is live in over 40 languages.

Export Python code to Replit

  • Today, a new feature will allow you to export Python code to Replit, in addition to Google Colab.
  • This feature is now live in over 40 languages.
