The gimbal killer? GoPro Hero 7 Black review

Published

The Hero 7 Black is just what GoPro needed.

There’s only been some minor hardware upgrades but what they’ve done on the software side is compelling.

DJI Osmo Pocket 3 is Brilliant

Published

on

Bravo DJI.

The next generation Osmo Pocket 3 is a superbly thought out content creation device that will have owners of the previous models throwing their cash at DJI.

And I’m one of those.

Here are just some of the reasons why I’m SUPER PUMPED about the DJI Osmo Pocket 3.

  • 2-inch OLED screen that rotates and activates device – 100% P3 wide colour gamut.
  • 1-inch CMOS sensor with 3.2μm equivalent pixel size, high ISO, and high dynamic range
  • 10-Bit D-Log M
  • Built-in timecode function
  • Wirelessly connect to the two transmitters of DJI Mic 2 without connecting the receiver
  • Full-pixel PDAF for stable and fast focusing
  • Low light setting in 4K/30fps
  • Active Track 6.0
  • Bigger is better
DJURO EXPLAINS THE BENEFITS OF THE POCKET 3 TO TIM GILBERT ON SKY NEWS WEEKEND EDITION

DJI sent through the Creator Combo kit for review. It’s the ultimate vlogging package because of the wide angle and gimbal stabilised footage. The image quality has improved out of sight. Make sure you check out the night mode shots in top video. The massive issue with the first models – like all action cams – was and still is – poor low light performance. On a bright sunny day the Pocket and Pocket 2 are fantastic. But add a little gloom and the image starts to degrade rapidly.

2-inch OLED screen that rotates and activates Pocket 3

It’s good to see DJI approach low light with some sort of solution. The larger sensor helps but clearly with their low light mode they are aggressively reducing noise in camera. This is limited to 4K 30fps which is fine by me. The look may not suit everyone but at least they are doing something when it comes to low light. See for yourself in the images below. They weren’t recorded in extremely low light but it gives you an idea of what DJI is doing with its processing of the image.

One the left – normal 4K/25fps. On the right – low light mode 4K/25fps

Slow motion gets a boost with the new model too. 4K 120fps is pretty sweet on a gimbal.

The screen is pretty clever too. When I saw the image on the box I thought, “does it move?” Well, yes it does. It rotates from landscape to portrait orientation and back again with a satisfying snap. It also turns the Pocket 3 on or off. It’s worth noting that low light mode does not work in portrait shooting.

The other big advantage the Pocket 3 has over action cameras is autofocus. It adds so much more to your videos or photos. So whether it’s focus tracking of kids, pets, and dancers the Pocket 3 is bang on with sharpness. It also has object display mode. This quickly changes focus to the displayed object held up by the presenter.

DJI Mic 2 Transmitter

The other fantastic part of the this combo package is the wireless microphone setup. There’s a transmitter included in the box but if you get another mic – you can pair it as well. The process in ridiculously simple. Like I said, this is a well thought out creation device that will offer far more than the previous models to serious creators.

Stay tuned to Image Matrix Tech for more videos and analysis over the next few days.

The Hero12 Black has been announced by GoPro and although it’s not what the rumours suggested – in some ways it’s actually better. And it will cost A$649.

Speculation of a larger sensor with 8K video did not eventuate but what we have is a GoPro camera with so many extra features it makes sense for pros and consumers at the same time.

Here’s a list of key product details:

Up to 2x Longer Runtimes: Dramatically improved power management system delivers 70 minutes of continuous recording at 5.3K60 (HERO12 Black’s highest performance setting), over 95 minutes at 5.3K30 and over 155 minutes of continuous recording at 1080p30, all with HyperSmooth 6.0 video stabilisation on.

High Dynamic Range (HDR) Photo + Video: HDR delivers eye-popping high dynamic range photos and 5.3K+ 4K video.

Market-Leading 5.3K Resolution + 8x Slo-Mo: 5.3K video delivers 91% more resolution than 4K and an incredible 665% more than 1080p. Slow down to 8x slo-mo in up to 2.7K resolution. Or grab up to 24.7 megapixel frame grabs and 27 megapixel photos. Capture 4K video at up to 120 frames per second for 4x slo-mo.

GoPro Hero12 Black can function at depths of 10m+

Wide Angle Perspectives with Max Lens Mod 2.0 Accessory: 36% wider field of
view when capturing widescreen video and 48% taller field of view when capturing vertical
video. Now with 2x more scratch-resistant lens and a durable hydrophobic lens coating that
wicks water drops away.

GP-Log + available LUTs: GP-Log with available Look Up Tables (LUTs) allows professional users to have more control with post-production editing and colour grading.

Wireless Audio Support for Apple AirPods + Other Bluetooth Devices: Now you can record audio straight to HERO12 Black from Bluetooth devices such as Apple AirPods, earbuds, headphones and microphones—great for vlogging, scene narration and issuing voice commands to control your HERO12 Black from a distance.

Video Stabilization with 360° Horizon Lock: HyperSmooth 6.0 features next-generation AutoBoost that automatically boosts video stabilisation as needed, while
maintaining the smallest cropping margin possible with imperceptible transitions between crop levels. HyperSmooth 6.0 also enables horizon-levelling even with full 360° camera rotation in the Linear + Horizon Lock digital lens or in all lens settings when using the Max Lens Mod 2.0 accessory.

8:7 Aspect Ratio: 1/1.9” sensor enables market-leading versatility with its extra-large

full-frame 8:7 aspect ratios. Now available across all video resolutions as well as TimeWarp, Time Lapse, Night Lapse and all Night Effects modes.

GoPro-Exclusive HyperView Ultra-Wide Angle Lens Setting: HERO12 Black’s HyperView digital lens sets a new bar for immersive, wide-angle video. Also available as an even wider Max HyperView perspective when using the optional Max Lens Mod 2.0 accessory.
